Adapalene is a vitamin A derivative, or retinoid, applied topically to treat mild to moderate acne. Off-label it may be used to treat other skin conditions or blemishes.
Though an effective acne treatment on its own, patients sometimes buy adapalene in combination with other medications for greater results. It is one of few retinoids which does not become deactivated when used with peroxide, so it can be found in combination with benzoyl peroxide in products like Epiduo. It is also combined with clindamycin and doxycycline for more serious acne infections.
Adapalene can be used in patients age 9 and up. Use in pregnancy or breastfeeding has not been studied; it is unlikely to be harmful but mothers may wish to abstain from use to be on the safe side.
How Adapalene Works
The exact mechanism by which this product works is unclear; it is thought to help unclog pores and reduce inflammation by encouraging cell division and discouraging cells along hair follicles from clumping together. What is clear is that it works---patients who buy adapalene find their skin is fresh and healthy looking.
It will take some time for adapalene to work, usually around 4 to 6 weeks, though some experience results much faster. Some patients find acne worsens in the first month of treatment. It should begin to clear up within 6 weeks of treatment, continuing to improve until gone completely. Treatment should last a minimum of 12 weeks, and may continue for much longer.
Rarely adapalene does virtually nothing for acne. If there are no improvements after 12 weeks of treatment, consider alternative options.
Using Adapalene
This medication is used once per day, preferably at the same time each day. Application is simple:
There is no benefit to had from using the medication more often or in greater quantity; it is more likely to produce uncomfortable and unsightly skin irritation.
Many patients prefer to use adapalene right before bed, when all other skincare products have been removed, though other skincare products can be used with adapalene as long as the gel has had a chance to dry. Check with a doctor or pharmacist before applying other medicated products along with adapalene.
Adverse Reactions
Side effects from adapalene are very unlikely, as little of the medication is absorbed into the skin. The vast majority happen at the application site:
The above are not cause for concern unless severe or persistant.
The medication can cause increased sensitivity to sunlight; patients should use sunscreen and protective clothing until effects are known. Avoid extended sun exposure and tanning beds for the duration of use.
